Plosives: sounds
which are produced by obstructing the flow of air from the mouth or nose, causing
a build up of air pressure. When released this pressure causes an explosive or
popping noise.
Examples of plosives in English are /p/ and /b/ - place your
hand in front of your mouth and say “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled pepper”
- you can feel and hear the /p/ make a popping sound.
Plosives are also known as stops.
